So my boss came to work with an audio cd that he thought I would like, still not sure if he is trying to say something to me about my work 🤔 anyway….the cd is about gifts based on the talents parable in the book of Matthew 25:14. And he was right, I loved it, I listened to it over and over. When I was trying to prepare a message to talk to Young Adults Ministry about finances, I subscribed to a christian website and upon subscribing I received a 23 paged booklet which I started reading immediately. Guess what the book was about? Yep Matthew 25 :14 at that point I realised that God was trying to tell me something I have been missing, so I decided that I will be sharing on this whenever an opportunity is provided. So here we are 🙂
The Parable of the Talents
14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
From the first six verses we learn God gave each one of us something (seed/talent /gift), he also gave us time and what I like about this passage is that it says each one according to their ability. God is a fair God he does not expect something from you that he knows you are incapable of doing. Lastly, he did not give instruction to any of them but he trusted them to use their discretion. God expects us to use our brains, we have the ability to make the right choices and he wants us to choose to have a better life, choose to improve, choose to grow what so we can be a blessing. God wants us to use our brains to cultivate and grow what God has given us. Time + talent+plan= results. We need to be intentional about growing what God has given us. We all have time and talent and we have brains, the only difference is our thinking so we need to check our minds.
20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
In this passage we learn that the reward for the one with 5 talents is the same as the one with 2, that means God rewards faithfulness , therefore it is foolish to compare yourself with anyone. Even if you do not become the next Bill Gates if you are faithful with what God gave you, God will reward you the same. My favorite part is when he says ” you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many” faithfulness will lead to your promotion. When you prove that you are not lazy, more will be entrusted to you. Because to whom much is given much is required” Luke 12:48. Those of us who are working, would attest to the fact that we prefer giving work to certain people over others simply because they have proven themselves. The last thing to highlight here is the fact that he said you can enter into his Joy… I don’t know about you but that excites me 😀 we have been taught over and over that hard working people do not enjoy the fruit of their labor, because they are too exhausted and stressed. But the bible teaches us that “the blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it” Proverbs 10:22. This is confirmation that God wants us to enjoy the blessings in our lives.
24 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’
We can be very quick to blame this guy for not using what he was given, however, this is an example of many of us. We are living in FEAR. Other people’s expectations make us afraid, knowing that God trusts us to fulfill a specific assignment can be intimidating. Fear paralyses us, it stops us from moving forward. It stops us from using our brains. 2 Timothy 1:7 Therefore, I remind you to keep ablaze the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment. Keeping your gift ablaze requires you to go beyond your fear of failure. This fear concept is not a foreign concept Paul knew that Timothy was afraid and he reminded him that he must not receive things that do not come from God. The verse says God has not given us the spirit of fearfulness, so someone else gives you this but it is not God. But he instead gives you power, love and a sound mind. When we move in the power of God, we have a correct view about whose we are, we understand that we can do whatever he has called us to do. We can hone our crafts, we can declare and call forth that which is already ours. Fear is the biggest challenge to us growing what God has given us. This fear is influenced by the lies of the enemy, the lie that says we are insignificant,we are a failures, that is the incorrect view about who we are. We need to renew our minds. Power fueled by love and correct thinking will lead to great results.
26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
He called him wicked and lazy, I think you will agree that sounds harsh especially coming from the Lord. So, if you listen to your fears and not live up to your potential he won’t commend you for playing safe instead he will call you out for being lazy. The wicked part hurts a bit 😳 I mean he is all knowing so he knows the guy didn’t want to disappoint him that’s why he just buried the talent so God at least finds what he left him with. But instead he says to him you failed to apply your mind because even if you just invested what I gave you with the bank at least I would have earned interest. So what I learned from this is, God has given us all we need to succeed but how successful we become is determined by us. If this guy just used a simple method of investment he would have earned interest even though there was very little effort from his side. Therefore, to fail you have to be sleeping on the job.
I believe each one of us have a part to play in building the Kingdom. We are interdependent when one part of the body does not do its job the whole body suffers, so if a decision not to rise above the limitations we set for ourselves doesn’t only affect us but the kingdom of God.
29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
So we ask why are the rich getting richer? It’s because they have been faithful with the little and the Lord blessed them with more. Use what you have, you can also double what he has given you. Ask God for wisdom, but do not play safe and deprive the world of what he has given you. So how many do you have ?1 or 3? Remember he rewards faithfulness. When you are tempted to think others are already doing what you want to do, remember you are unique they could never do it the way you do it. The Kingdom of God needs your gift otherwise you would not be here. We all need to play our part “sing the songs only we can sing, preach the word the way only we can, and love the people God has placed in our lives the way only we can”Dorcas Kayo
